In a recent study published in the Nordic Studies on Alcohol and Drugs Online journal, an intriguing link between microdosing and an enhanced sense of authenticity has been unveiled. This survey-based study observed a group of 18 participants engaging in microdosing over the course of one month, specifically focusing on the concept of "authenticity" and its close association with overall well-being.
The study aimed to explore the relationship between state authenticity (the experience of being true to oneself in a given moment) and microdosing—a practice that involves the regular consumption of minute doses of psychedelics, below the perceptual alteration threshold. The researchers hypothesized that microdosing could potentially increase state authenticity by influencing participants' mood, as well as the number and satisfaction derived from daily activities.
Data was collected through self-assessments of state authenticity, gathered from 18 microdosers in the Netherlands over a one-month period, resulting in a total of 192 observations.
The results indicated that both on the day of microdosing and the subsequent day, participants experienced significantly higher levels of state authenticity. Additionally, the study revealed that on the microdosing day, participants engaged in a greater number of activities and reported higher satisfaction with them. Although the following day saw an increase only in the number of activities, both the quantity of activities and the satisfaction derived from them were positively associated with state authenticity.
While this study had a small sample size and a relatively short duration of 30 days, it shed light on the potential positive effects of microdosing on authenticity. Participants reported heightened levels of satisfaction in various aspects of their day-to-day lives.
This pioneering study provides intriguing insights into the realm of microdosing and its potential impact on authenticity. Although further research is necessary to establish the long-term effects and generalizability of these findings, the connection between microdosing and an increased sense of authenticity offers a promising avenue for exploration. As the understanding of microdosing continues to evolve, it may pave the way for innovative approaches to personal growth and well-being.
